Types of Ageism

  • Institutional ageism – occurs when an institution perpetuates ageism through its actions and policies.
  • Interpersonal ageism – occurs in social interactions.
  • Internalized ageism – A person internalizes ageist beliefs and applies them to themselves.

WHAT IS AGEISM? 

Ageism or agism refers to the stereotypes (how we think), prejudice (how we feel) and discrimination (how we act) towards others or oneself based on age. Ageism is pervasive during the job-search process and perpetuates stereotypes of older people, results in biased hiring processes and decisions based on unfounded stereotypes, and creates barriers for older people to gain employment or re-entry into the workforce.

Ageism is often a cause for individual acts of age discrimination and also more systemic discrimination, such as in the design and implementation of services, programs, and opportunities. Age discrimination involves unequally treating individuals due to age in a way that is contrary to human rights law.
